Announcing Geek Moot 2009
May 27th, 2009 by Ted KulpThe developers of CMS Made Simple have finalized plans for the yearly developer conference. However, there is one major change… we’re inviting you to join us.
On 26-27 September, CMSMS will host the first public Geek Moot event at The Showroom in Sheffield, UK. There will be plenty of presentations by the devs and others, events, networking and just general geeking out. There are plans for evening events in the works and they will be announced soon.
Come spend the weekend with the CMSMS devs and other people just like you for a weekend of fun with the system you love.
For more details on the event, see http://geekmoot.com.
Presentations
We are looking for people to do talks and presentations on CMSMS related topics. If you’d like to do a presentation (and promote yourself as a CMSMS know-it-all or your company), please contact us here. Proposals are due by 1st July.
Sponsors
We are also looking for sponsors. There are details about what sponsorship could provide here. We would love to get several sponsors if possible.
Donation Drive
We will also do our yearly donation drive in a month or so. The money for this will go to paying for several devs to travel to the conference, as they normally wouldn’t be able to. We’ll announce that when we’re prepared to handle the influx of funds — and figure out who needs them.
Thanks!
We hope to see you in September!

Also, thanks to everyone who submitted proposals for the location. The choice was really tough, but we made it hard on ourselves by moving the date. In the end, it came down to price since we didn’t want to charge too much for our first attempt. I’ll be looking at other potential locations for the next one that might be a bit more central to our userbase, so keep that in mind.
Thanks again!

Much as I’d love a trip back to my country of birth, it’s too far from Australia (and too expensive).
Still, count me in for a donation this year.

Best of luck with the conference. Hope it’s a success.

How about a video conference?

Not sure if I will be able to make this, but will it be presented as a pod cast online?

Looks dark to make this happen as a open conference…. This goes TO slow
If you look at http://geekmoot.com/ you see the joining persons so far….
We need much more to make this happen!

Hi. I wanted to come, late august which was estimated was perfect.
September however I can not, and from Norway it is a little of limit to Sheffield, compare to let’s say Amsterdam. I hope next time for central Europe – Amsterdam in the summer, perhaps.. Nice!
Good luck and hope to see you next year.

I though it was supposed to be in Late August! Can’t make it in September… I do sincerely hope that the Geek Moot is a success for you, but I can’t help thinking that Sheffield is a rather odd place to hold it. Its not great to get to. There’s no airport, nearest is Manchester which doesn’t have that many budget airline flights. The nearest budget airline destination is north of London at Stansted, then you would have to travel back down to London, across London and then back up North on the trains. I must say that the venus doesn’t look that appealing. Good luck.

@Ray:
Agreed. The location wasn’t ideal, but we had an “in” and it helped keep the cost way down. The train ride from the airport is way cheaper that what it would’ve cost to have it elsewhere. And granted, it’s my fault for waiting too long to plan it. This process will start in January next year so that this can’t happen again. Life just got a little out of hand — before I knew it, the event time was 4 months away and it wasn’t planned…

@Ray: Ryanair and Easyjet fly there from Amsterdam. I am pretty sure a lot of cheaper airlines fly on Amsterdam too. It would only mean a transfer.
@Ted: Let’s just make the best of it. I talked to Utter extensively, he’ll get in touch about my suggestions.

@Ray:
Lots of cheap flights go in to East Midlands Airport near Nottingham (50 miles away) – good rail connection to Sheffield through the new East Midland Parkway station.
There is an airport at Doncaster which is known as Robin Hood Airport with budget flights.
This is very close to Sheffield.
Leeds/Bradford airport is also pretty close by.
Sheffield has good train connections north/south and west to Manchester/Liverpool and south west to Birmingham.
Also excellent road connections.
It’s a vibrant place with good shopping/nightlife/beer and two prestigious universities – so let’s not be too hard on the place!

Will try to make this – I used to live in Sheffield!
However, my wife is due to have a baby the 23rd! I have a feeling that timing is going to be interesting…
